Malalai was a Pashtun heroine, who helped to lead an army against the British in 1880. Malalai's actions in joining the battle gave hope to the soldiers, who then turned on the British, driving them back toward Kandahar. Malalai took up a flag after its bearer was killed, and then she herself was fatally shot.
