What is the purpose of the essay?

The purpose of this section in the book is to introduce the reader to tea and the tea industry in the West. Westerners seem to have embraced tea fully, both as a beverage and a social event, and so it is appropriate for Westerners to learn tea's origins and how tea is used elsewhere.
