Blood is a key symbol in the novel, carrying a myriad of meanings. Blood is often associated with family, as in the general phrases "it runs in the blood." Aminata's key concern is family and home, so blood is prominent in this way. Blood also symbolizes womanhood and the ability to bear children. When Aminata is kidnapped, she is on the cusp of womanhood, and she becomes a woman -- that is, begins menstruating -- during the long walk to the boat.
