How does White present the character of Arthur in the novel, The Book of Merlyn?

White presents Arthur as a sympathetic character, who has been betrayed by his wife, his best friend, and his knights. Arthur is a broken man. Regardless, White also portrays Arthur's determination to struggle on, all while wanting to quit, as he realizes that he must find some way to continue.
