Ana's scrolls symbolize agency. Whenever Ana is trying to reclaim who she is and what she wants, the author depicts her writing on the scrolls, fiercely working to reconnect with and record the truth of her spirit and heart. The more stories Ana collects, the more she writes. The more she writes, the more empowered and centered she feels. By the end of the novel, Ana has collected innumerable scrolls into bound books. These writings not only prove Ana's devotion to recording the forgotten stories of women, but illustrate her fierce independence.
