The language used throughout the novel is conversational and casual. Kundera admits secret thoughts like his violent desire to rape his friend the editor at times, while completely giving the dialogue and thoughts behind all of his characters' actions. At times, he will insert his own thought or analysis during the character's tale, such as when Kundera remarks on page 223, while describing Tamina's husband's frequent interrogation of her, "...love is a continual interrogation. I don't know of a better definition of love."
