The League of St. Alexander symbolizes mistrust and the treachery of so-called friends. It demonstrates that no one is really trustworthy in the world of the novel, because they may just turn around and report on you - as the young student Andrew does to Malcolm. The League also represents the basest aspects of humanity - the desire to get back at and hurt others, just for the fun of it. Many students in the League simply report on those whom they do not like or who have wronged them in some small way in the past.
