The acorn is a symbol for the idea that things are not what they always appear to be. On the surface, the acorn is simply an acorn; but upon closer inspection by Malcolm, the acorn becomes a beautifully carved piece of wood with a hidden message inside. It symbolizes the idea that if one looks closely enough, one can find beauty even in the smallest and most mundane of things.
