The novel's central conflict revolves around Mrs. Ellsworth and her protege, Oceola. One example of this conflict can be found in Mrs. Ellsworth's reaction to Oceola's relationship with Pete. Another conflict between the women is over music itself..... as Oceola is open to the beauty of music in all of its forms, all while Mrs. Ellsworth tries to constrict her.
