In Chapter Two, Valancy is clearly depressed. She feels as if she is contained in a world where she doesn't have any choices. It is as if she is a prisoner in her own home. She has resigned herself to the fact that this is how her life is and how it is always going to be. This, however, foreshadows that something drastic is going to happen to change Valancy's dreary life into a life that she deems worth living.
