Manhood is a recurring idea in the novel. Ramun has always believed that becoming a partner in the family pearl dealership will make him a man. Yet, even after the huge celebration and the unveiling of the Salazar and Son sign, Ramun feels incomplete. He begs his father to teach him the skill of pearl diving, but Ramun has to endure the humiliating jibes of Gaspar Ruiz.
