Hispaniola was the Spanish name given by Columbus and the Spanish conquistadors to the second largest island in the West Indies. Today the island is divided into Haiti in the west, and the Dominican Republic in the east. Hispaniola gave the Spanish strategic access to other islands in the West Indies, Mexico, and South America.
