One main theme in the novel is manhood, specifically, Tarans desire to prove his manhood and cast off the cloak of childhood. Over the course of the novel, Taran finds the transition from child to manhood difficult and challenging. In the end, he attains the manhood he desires and learns the true meaning of honor and heroism.
