The area in question is Cotler's Hell, which is located in Wyoming. It is located near the Shoshone Canyon and was once known as the Stinkingwater River. Cotler's Hell contains numerous thermal springs, which were hot and steamy..... like you'd picture.... the land felt as if fire burned beneath it and jets of steam hissed from below. It was seen as resembling what Hell might look like.
