Who is Alexandre in The Belly of Paris by Emile Zola?

Alexandre is a big, burly, well proportioned, young porter in Les Helles. Alexandre seems interested in politics for awhile, but in the end, politics don't measure up to the boating, fishing, and hunting expeditions he loves.
