What is the theme in The Beet Queen by Louise Erdrich?

One major theme in the novel is that of abandonment. The novel begins with the Adelaide's feeling of abandonment after her lovers death, after which, she abandons her own children. Thus begins the cycle of abandoning and being abandoned for her children Mary and Karl.
