The Branch Analysis introduces the two main characters and the basic premise of the story. Karl and Mary Adare have been forced to travel to North Dakota to find their mother's sister. This chapter does not say why they are alone or why they are traveling by boxcar rather than passenger train, foreshadowing the next chapter in which these things will be explained.
