Who is Maria from The Beautiful Room Is Empty?

Maria attends the art school located across the street from the narrator's prep school. The two become close friends, as the narrator finds Maria to be challenging, intelligent, and independent. At one point, the narrator even tries being a part of a heterosexual relationship with Maria.... the experiment is unsuccessful.
