Examples of foreshadowing and Richard's character development appear in the introduction of the novel, in which, the author uses Vietnam war movie scenes and numerous mentions of Richard's marijuana use and risk-taking attitude. Richard's inability to truly understand the Vietnamese people natives hints at further misguided actions.
