In the climax of the first act (Act I, Scene 5) is a metaphoric externalization and dramatization of Pavlo's transformation into a soldier. Ardell acts as a manifestation
Pavlo's internal desire - an angel of will - pulling him, literally and metaphorically, out of suicidal despair and dressing him in a new identity, removing him from the previously described dark river of emptiness and into the new life he's so clearly craved.
