Cosimo's story takes place in late eighteenth century Italy following the Wars of Succession and preceding Napoleon's rule of the country. The town of Ombrosa is the boys' hometown. It is a provincial town of farmers and tradesmen, and society is still very much divided between the wealthy and the working-class.
