Just as the prison cell represents modern society, the iron peg that sticks out of its wall represents anything in said society that deviates from the norm. It’s material and shape contrasts starkly with the the smooth, yet angular white walls of the cell in such a way that it becomes impossible to ignore to Turnbull. As its irregularity continues to grate on his mind, he grows to despise its existence for its seeming uselessness and uniqueness.
