Flying symbolizes growth and improvement in the novel. Once the man reaches the new country, flying is everywhere; not only do bird-like and cricket-like creatures soar through the air, but people are also transported via balloons that float over the city. As the man ascends into the sky, he is able to acknowledge that his new home is a great improvement, as it is free of things like the giant, spiked tentacles. When the man’s family returns to him they are also transported through the sky, which symbolizes the growth the man has achieved in his new country that has thus allowed him to reunite with his family.
