IMportance of pens

Pens and other writing utensils represent Jacob's creativity. A pair of double-inked click pens represents opportunities for him to create, as do a pair of pens offered to him by an orderly at the clinic where he goes for psychiatric help. On the other end of the spectrum, there is the silver pen given to him by his father and since lost, which represents Jacob's lost creative desires and impulses.
