Medical school symbolizes Zuckerman’s frustration and disillusionment with his life. After years of loneliness, sadness, and little productivity in terms of writing, Zuckerman feels that a possible solution to his general misery would be to abandon writing as a career and become a doctor. Zuckerman feels that his writing has lost its meaning and that working as a doctor would have meaning in the benefit it has for other people. However, Zuckerman’s plan (like his attempt to escape his personal problems) is rather foolish, as told to him by his friend Bobby Freytag.
