How does the author use foreshadowing in The American?

In Chapter Thirteen, James includes a conversation in which Claire and Newman have a discussion about Valentin. During their exchange, Claire notes that she has a feeling that Valentin will come to an unhappy end, foreshadowing trouble for Valentin.
