The author's use of language is, by far, one of the most interesting aspects of the collection. In her essays, she comments on her feelings about language (how it has a physical life) and how she uses it (how it needs to be not only a clear and full reflection of the identities of the characters' identities but an accurate reflection of how people both speak and feel). She makes a clear effort to essentially transcribe how language is spoken in all its informality and flexibility, avoiding more formal and/or traditional uses of grammar and sentence structure in all but a few particular situations, evidently chosen with care and purpose.
