The knife is a metaphor of a separate entity. The subtle knife cuts any material and cuts between worlds, but yet is not indestructible. If the bearer of the knife is distracted, the knife will shatter. The knife has intentions of its own, unanticipated by its creators. Will is the bearer of the knife.
