Who is Joseph from The Alienist and what is their importance?

Joseph is a young, male prostitute, who was friends with the sixth victim. Over the course of the novel, Joseph and Moore become friends. Unfortunately, Jospeh is killed shortly after providing Moore with important information about the killer's final victim. After his murder, his body is dumped at the offices of the investigation.
