Political conflict is a recurring idea of The Alexiad and while many of those conflicts are external, quite a few are internal. Being the ruler of an Empire is not easy. Many are envious of your position and a few are in a position to attain it if the Emperor is not careful. Alexius and his brother Isaac led his family to take the throne from the previous emperor, so they came to power through dissension and revolt. The Ducas family nearly did the same and proved a threat to Alexius for a time until he gave them a share in power.
