The Englishman serves as Santiago's foil, which in turn, makes him Santiago's motivator. When the Englishman comes on the scene, Santiago finds new focus.... his desire to renew his Personal Journey was rekindled. The Englishman becomes a guiding force that leads him to the Alchemist.
