After Sara is released from the Blackwell Island Asylum, Theo purchases the fancy sewing machine as an impromptu gift. The sewing machine is a particularly intentional gift, as Sara had previously been harassed by Mr. Ainsworth when she was a seamstress. The sewing machine serves as a symbol of a fresh start... a symbol of empowerment.
