The heroic code that Homer uses as a common thread throughout the Iliad is an underlying catalyst for many of the characters and their decisions. The code held that the honorable warrior would do the right thing, protect the innocent, fight your own battles and show bravery. This is illustrated when Hecktor gives Paris grief for not choosing to fight in the battlefield.
