What is Mother Philomela

Mother Philomela is an example of how Tess affects the world in a positive way, even if she does not realize it. Mother Philomela also provides a fresh point-of-view on Tess’ life. She is a reminder that the beliefs of Tess’ family are not fair. In fact, the nun condemns Tess’ parents and believes that they were incapable of raising her the way she needed them to. Furthermore, Mother Philomela only began her own journey because she was inspired by Tess’ willingness to find her own path in life. The nun is the first of many characters to acknowledge the good Tess brought into their lives.
