Significance of the Road

The road - both the physical one and the metaphorical one of Tess’ journey - represent the potential for possibilities. The title itself, Tess of the Road, implies that Tess will always be drawn to adventure. No matter who she meets or what she does, she will always seek out these possibilities. She will always be on the road. Most importantly, the road shows Tess that she does not have to settle to make a new life. Her journey does not have to end for her to be happy. As long as she keeps moving, she will continue to find meaning wherever she goes.
