n chapter twenty-four, Hester calls David with the news of his impending arrest. She assures him that he'll be out on bail by midnight, but David knows that means he'll miss the meeting with Elizabeth that afternoon. He tells Hester only that he can't be arrested and prepares to run out of the office but sees officers already waiting for him at the front door. He instead rushes to the back door and runs into the alley. David gets himself caught up in a dead-end alley. He can't reach the fire escapes and finally throws himself into the least-odorous dumpster he can find. He can barely keep from gagging, but manages to remain quiet until he believes the police have passed by and are gone. He climbs out and finds an officer at the opening of the alley. David tackles the man and breaks his jaw. He now knows that he's guilty not only of fleeing but of assaulting a police officer as he continues to run.I think he should have seen this coming and had some kind of plan.
