The novel comprises 34 chapters, each subtending a varying length of time within Jessie's first few months in LA. Time elapsed in each chapter varies from one distinct moment or thought to an entire day or more. Chapter 9, for example, is a brief chapter during which Jessie contemplates the notion of a perfect day, and therefore is somewhat nontemporal. Chapter 33, on the other hand, begins before school and follows Jessie throughout the day until she gets back home from work. Each chapter is typically written in chronological order, although Jessie sometimes recalls previous times in her life which interrupt the continual flow of the narrative.
