Jessie is intelligent and well-read, but also a teenager, and the writing style and word choice directly reflect both of those facets of her personality. The language, far from being literary and austere, is loose, flowing, and extremely prosaic, mimicking the style in which a teenager would feasibly speak. Even the narration is written in this style, lending the novel the effect of reading more like a journal or an internal monologue than a traditional novel. Slang, profanity, and internet speech also make frequent appearances, which correlates to Jessie's status as a tech-savvy teen living in Los Angeles.
