Alcohol, in the few times it appears in the novel, symbolizes a lack of inhibition and therefore truthfulness. The first time Jessie gets drunk at Gem's party, she texts with SN and admits that she likes that he is weird, telling him "I warned you I was drunk" (163). The second time, she is in Scarlett's basement and lashes out at SN for maintaining his anonymity, believing him to be Caleb. Although her assumption is incorrect, she reveals her true feelings after drinking, symbolizing a newfound bravery due to the alcohol and thus a willingness to tell him of her frustration with him.
