How does the author use foreshadowing in Tambourines to Glory?

In Chapter Three, we are exposed to the first mention of Essie's knife. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Essie always has her knife, that she keeps it in the pocket of her coat, and that Laura knows exactly where. This foreshadows Buddy's murder.
