The is one of those poems that means different things to different people. As Plath was a creative (if not tortured) soul, this could also mean that she was struck by a creative spark that drove her onward to accomplish a worthwhile goal or work of art. And, in the end, that was worth it, though it cost her (him) his life. To give one's life for something like that....worth it, the poet says.
