As Toshiko contemplates the unforgettable sight of "the baby, wrapped in stained newspaper" in a "scene fit for a butchershop," she moves toward a decision that puts her in harm's way. Her macabre vision of the nurse's son "savagely [stabbing her son] with a knife" foreshadows her own possible fate.
