Suicide is an important motif in the story. Throughout the entire novel, people are continuously committing suicide. Suicide completely surrounds Tender's life. His entire family did it, the people he "counsels" over the phone do it, and Tender constantly contemplates committing suicide himself. After Tender becomes a celebrity, the ultimate goal of his media team is that he will commit suicide with the entire world watching. Since he was born, Tender knew that one day he would need to take his life, but cannot overcome his own fear of it.
