George W. Rappleyea was the manager at one of Dayton's mines. He saw the ACLU ad for a schoolteacher willing to help challenge the Tennessee statute and saw it as a chance to strike down the law. Rappleyea also made the first call to the ACLU about Dayton's willingness to help.
