Another major theme in this novel is the idea that one must face one's own personal demons. In Meredith's case, her demon is her father. Meredith is given the chance to run away from her father by Leah Louisa, who tries to get a quick order of guardianship in order to get her granddaughter away from her father. Meredith realizes, however, that she would still feel as if her father was chasing her as long as he is allowed to remain out of jail. She also knows that she will feel as if she is responsible if more children are molested and she had not done anything to try to stop her father. For this reason, Meredith leaves the safety of her grandmother's house in order to make herself a sacrifice.
