This prompts Mr. Enfield to recount a story about something that happened on the street which involved the door. A hideously ugly man trampled a young girl and Enfield determined to blackmail him so that he could help the young girl and her family. The man returned with 100 pounds drawn on the account of Dr. Jekyll. It is into and out of the mysterious door that this hideous man came.
