Greed and selfishness is a main theme of the book. The abduction of Annie O'Sullivan looks like a random act on the part of a psychopath in the beginning of this novel. The reader sees the abduction through Annie's eyes and therefore the reader wonders with Annie what made the Freak chose her. The Freak shows Annie pictures he has taken of her, flyers he has collected on her properties in her job as a realtor, and describes his knowledge of her as a child as well as an adult. These things suggest the Freak stalked Annie for a time before he kidnapped her; something that is not unusual. However, the reader begins to wonder how the Freak came into such specific knowledge of Annie's childhood.
