In Chapter Eight, Rhonda favors Ruth going to live with her mother and attend college, but Ruth will have none of it. Several times she emphasizes that she will do nothing that the Ellis family wants of or for her. Accepting this with a grain of salt, as one does adolescent proclamations, Rhonda says that while she appreciates Ruth's company she does not want to imprison her, using infamous Alcatraz to seal her metaphor.
