What does this quote mean "Once a thing is known, it can't be unknown?"

When was it applied in the book? How many times was it mentioned in the book?

After checking my copy of the novel, I see that this phrase is used four times (at least). In context, the phrase refers to the fact that once we have confirmed something in our own minds..... we cannot erase the idea regardless of its origin.
