What caused the final separation between Leo and Stargirl?

Leo sneaks out of school to avoid Stargirl in Chapter 30. In Chapter 31, we learn that he doesn't take her to the dance. Leo's obvious embarrassment and inability to overcome peer pressure ends their relationship.
